Why
did you choose Ohio State University for your graduate studies?
When
I decided to pursue a Ph. D., there were three schools which
excelled in my area of study. OSU was one of them. I contacted
some of the professors here to discuss my research ideas and
their program. I felt the combination of scholarship and financial
assistance here was the right choice for me.

We

You can also take individual study courses with a professor,
tailored to your interests.

What
do you like about Columbus?
Columbus
has a lot more to offer than I expected. As the capital of
the state, I am amazed at the level of cultural and technological
activities in the city. It is centrally located and allows
me access to the rest of the state or the country in a few
short hours by car or plane.

What
has been your experience in obtaining financial aid?
I
am very pleased with the number of funding sources available.
For example, whenever I have a conference to attend, I know
I will be able to find assistance from various university
offices to help defray the cost.

Why
did you choose Ohio State University for your graduate studies?
OSU
has an excellent graduate program in Textiles and Clothing
major, one of the best in the country. Our program is demanding,
but allows us to get great training in teaching and research
throughout the graduate program. I earned my master's degree
from the same department years ago and left the school to
work in industry. Two years ago, I came back to the same program
at OSU to pursue my doctorate degree because I knew the quality
of training and faculty support that I would get here.

As

interests of students in advancing the field. In other words,
our program is open to new development in the field and this
allows our program to be well up-to-date with the fast changing
society, culture, and technology.

What
do you like about Columbus?
Not
too big, not too small. Living expenses are a lot less than
big cities, but still you can have some taste of city life.

What
has been your experience in obtaining financial aid?
I've
been very impressed with our faculty in their efforts to provide
financial aid to more students. I've been supported from my
master's program here to my doctorate program as a GA. This
year, I have a college fellowship.

Why
did you choose Ohio State University for your graduate studies?
I
chose the Ohio State University for my graduate studies because
of two reasons. First, the reputation of the Consumer and
Textile Sciences Department and its faculty are outstanding.
I wanted to graduate knowing that this reputation would be
associated with me. Second, my area of study includes textile
science, and I wanted hands-on experience with archaeological
and historical textiles. I knew I would have those opportunities
if I went to OSU.

What
do you like about your graduate program at Ohio State?
The
thing I like best about my graduate program are the skills
I have obtained and the experiences that I have had. By working
closely with my advisor, Dr. Kathryn Jakes, a well-known researcher
in textile science, I have had the opportunity to present
my thesis at an American Institute for Conservation Textile
Specialty Group session. This allowed me to meet and network
with prominent researchers in the field.

Any
comment on the Research facilities, teaching, and opportunities
at Ohio
State?
The
teaching opportunities are great! When I first came to OSU,
I was assigned as a Graduate Research Associate in the Historic
Costume and Textiles Collection. Since then, I have been a
GTA teaching Introductory Textiles. I have also had the opportunity
of being the primary instructor for an undergraduate level
class.

What
do you like about Columbus?
Columbus
is a great city. From diverse shopping to fabulous restaurants,
there seems to be something for everyone. Columbus is extremely
diverse and active. You will never get bored.
.............................................................................................................
What
has been your experience in obtaining financial aid?
It
was very easy for me to get financial aid. It was also very
easy to apply for and obtain a graduate student associateship.

Why
did you choose Ohio State University for your graduate studies?
There
are two reasons why I chose OSU for my graduate studies. First
of all, my undergraduate advisor, as well as a few other CTS
faculty, was interested in the same topic that I wanted to
do my Master's thesis on, and, she has published several articles
relating to my research topic. With this in mind, I knew that
I would have plenty of support in the completion of my Master's
degree. The second reason why I chose OSU was because I wanted
to complete my Master's through a Combined Degree program
where I started my Master's my senior year, and finished the
program a year later. In other words, within five years I
will have finished both my undergraduate and Master's programs.
The opportunity to complete a program of this kind was available
here at OSU.
.............................................................................................................
What
do you like about your graduate program at Ohio State?
The
people, both faculty and students, make the difference in
my program. Everyone is as helpful as can be, whether you
need encouragement or criticism with your work.
.............................................................................................................
Any
comment on the Research facilities, teaching, and opportunities
at Ohio
State?
Currently,
my research topic doesn't involve the use of OSU's Research
facilities, but, I have heard good things about them. Meanwhile,
teaching opportunities, specifically in my department seem
to be quite abundant and worthwhile. Other opportunities for
advancement, leadership positions, community service, etc.
are also available here at OSU.
.............................................................................................................
What
do you like about Columbus?
Many,
many things: the big size of the city, the many malls and
shops, the fact that Columbus is a college town with OSU being
a city inside a city, the various restaurants that serve the
campus area, etc.
.............................................................................................................
What
has been your experience in obtaining financial aid?
Well,
I've had my ups & I've had my downs, but, in all I'd say
it's been okay. I think the one thing that has made my experience
w/ financial aid better than it could've been were the various
connections I made w/ certain financial aid counselors; find
one you like and only work with him/her so that they can get
to know you and vice versa (you tend to get priority that
way!).
